Smart Storage Solutions for Small Gardens and Compact Outdoor Spaces
Space, the final frontier. That is, unless you have a small garden. You’ve probably already explored all that space there, and are looking for ways to maximise it. So, if you have a dinky garden, a compact courtyard or a mini plot, we’re here to explore the ways in which you can maximise space, make everything more efficient and give your garden a visual decluttering too.
1. Small Garden Sheds
Surprisingly, the first thing that we, a shed company recommend, would be a shed. In fairness, a small shed is an ideal way to declutter the garden. It helps put all the essentials in a neat spot and make everything appear neater to boot.
We have a range of small sheds that could be ideal for your space. These include:
- The 5ft x 6ft Premium Woodgrain Shed
- The 5ft x 6ft Premium Apex Shed
- The 6ft x 5ft Classic Garden Shed
The Premium options above even have built in tool hooks in the door, offering further space saving opportunities.

2. Vertical Shed Storage with Shelving
Your space may be limited because you’ve only been using the floor space.
Shelves in a shed will:
- Give you access to storage space that would otherwise be unavailable
- Make items easier to reach
- Make the space look a bit more pleasant
- Help keep things out of reach of children or small pets
We have a range of shelves – one for almost any storage space. They:
- Hold a serious amount of weight
- Are exceptionally easy to build
Sure, even I could do them and I sit at a computer for eight hours a day and have roughly the same DIY knowledge as a cat!
If you’re short on space but live in the third dimension, a shelf could be yer only man.
3. Bike Stands & Bike Racks
Storing you bike property, be it in the shed or on a balcony can save a surprising amount of space – and hassle.
I remember plonking my rothar in my dad’s shed when I was a teenager. Just freewheeling it in and letting it land where the gods decided. By lying it diagonally, the bike was taking up probably twice as much space as it should’ve.
A bike rack or bike stand would’ve save some space and grief by having a designated space.
Better still, when I was sent out for coal in the dark Winters, I wouldn’t have been cursing myself as I manoeuvred the bike around the coal bucket. Keep things nice and neat and yer dad happy with a bike rack.
4. Balcony Stores & More
If a small shed is too big, we have three options that are ideal for even smaller spaces, including apartment balconies.
The Balcony Store, for example:
- 5ft wide
- 2’11” deep
- 5’10” high
That shallow depth makes it particularly suitable for tighter or narrower spaces.
The Mabelle is even smaller again:
- 4’4″ wide
- 3’3″ deep
- 6’1″ high
It’s like a large locker, of sorts, and it’s perfect for keeping: Tools, Turf or Children’s toys stored away neatly.
Finally, there’s the Outdoor Storage Box:
- 7’3″ wide
- 2’11” deep
- 4’4″ high
This one is more squat than the others, but it’s a sizeable unit and is particularly popular with people who need to store:
- Mobility scooters
- Bikes
- Awkwardly sized items like fishing poles or solid ladders
5. Storage Boxes – No height issues
If you’re limited with vertical space, storage boxes are ideal.
They offer handy storage options for:
- Children’s toys
- Gardening tools
- Smaller outdoor items
The 800L Storage Box is a beefy boy, made with solid materials:
- 5’10” wide
- 2’4″ deep
- 2’7″ high
It’s perfect for the garden and, thanks to the reinforced lid, you can place up to 250kg spread out over the top of it.
6. Fold-Together Bistro Sets
Perhaps your features are actually the issue.
Wait, I don’t mean your face. You look lovely. I mean, the things that you actually want or need in the garden/balcony.
I mean the things you actually want or need in the garden or on the balcony.
Chief culprits: dining sets.
These can take up an unnecessary amount of room, particularly on patios or balconies.
Our Bistro Sets don’t have that issue.
They’re designed so that:
- The chairs slide neatly into the table
- The footprint is reduced by about 60%
- Once compacted, the set can be wrapped in the included rain cover
- Everything stays neat, tidy, and out of the way
No, seriously – you look great.
7. Throw it out!
My first football manager gave me some great advice:
“If you don’t know what you’re doing with it, get rid of it”.
Granted, he was talking about my inability to beat get around a defender, but I think he was also giving me advice about life, in his own way. And much like an 8 year old being shouted at in the face, point-blank by a fifty-odd year old, you should probably consider getting rid of it – if you don’t know what you’re doing with it.
I recently cleaned out my shed and I got clinical. ‘When will I actually need a broken Christmas bauble? Why am I still keeping this bulky, battered tool box when all I use is a hammer for every problem? Do I really need three ladders? Once you get rid of all those emotional-support measuring tapes and sentimental bags of grass-seed, you might be surprised at how much space you now have to play with in your shed, or in your garden.
