Buying a shed: everything you need to know

Everything you need to know about buying a shed

Buying a shed? We have lots of information about sheds on our website. We’ve got everything from ‘What to look for before you buy a shed‘ to lesser asked questions like ‘Can I connect two steel sheds together?‘. This might all sound great, but it might also be a little overwhelming if you already know what you want – and you just want to buy a shed.

So, today we’ll break down the whole sales process, from start to finish. If you’ve 10 minutes to spare, this read could save you from worrying about any part of your order.

We’ve written this in a way that you can jump to the main headlines as needed – you don’t need to read the whole thing (though we recommend that you do!). This post will concentrate on Steel Sheds only, though – so keep that in mind!

All you need to know

We have a whole guide on what to know before you buy your shed, which will take the sting out of being unprepared. It covers everything from the base, to the correct location and access. It’s well worth the read – and not just because I wrote it, but because it’ll answer 99% of the questions you might have while you’re considering getting a shed. If you’re looking for a TLDR (Too long, didn’t read) version, here are the key points:

Main Considerations when buying a shed

It’s important to remember that our steel sheds:

  • Require a solid, level base
(we don’t offer this as service, but we can ship our ShedBases to you that any aul eejit can put down.)
  • All our sheds measured gutter to gutter (i.e. the external widest points of the sheds)
  • Steel sheds are not named to their exact measurement; i.e. a 9ft x 10ft shed may be 9’7″ x 10’7″, for example; always read the dimensions on the page and in the dimensions images.
  • They may vary in size +/-10% in rare instances.
  • Steel Sheds may not be suitable in coastal locations (high salt content in the air may deteriorate galvanised steel).
  • If you get your shed assembled, our fitters do not remove the protective coating, or apply the screw caps.
  • And, no, you cannot live in your shed.

Armed with this information, you should be ready to order.

You might be concerned about a company’s work or their aftercare support. You needn’t worry with us, we have a great rating across the board. All the details below were correct at the time of writing.

Other than customer reviews, we’re peer reviewed!

And we’re a bit of craic as well:

If you’re just looking for information about prices, we’ve a few ways to get sorted:

Brochures

You can see our Brochures here. This is perhaps the quickest way to get a basic price. However, if you’re looking at the Steel Sheds, this price doesn’t include the delivery to your county. To get a more accurate price, use the product pages on this website.

Product pages

If you go to any product page, for example, the Colossus, you can see these three options:

Screenshot of the product without selecting any options

Once you choose something from each of the dropdown menus, a price will appear just below, like so:

The price has now appeared when each of the prices are selected

Call us

If you’d rather call us, that’s no problem. We’re at 01 864 4247. Just note, that the lines are only active during opening hours.

Social Media

We’re over on Facebook, we’ve got a connected Instagram account and we’re even on TikTok. Message us there if you’d rather, but as above, these are only monitored during opening hours.

Once you’ve found a shed that you want from us, you’ve a few ways of ordering.

Ordering Online

Ordering on our website is exceptionally easy. Add the product you want to the cart and checkout like you would normally on any other website. Online payments for steel sheds must be made in full before they’re dispatched/assembled.

Revolut Payments (Online)

You can go about buying a shed online using your Revolut card, of course, but if you plan on paying with your Revolut card anyway, it may be worth your while visiting the Sheds Direct Ireland website through the Revolut app. Here you can take advantage of their  2% cash-back offer (Max €20)*.

To do so:

  • Open your Revolut app, choose ‘Hub’ from the bottom bar (it’s on the right).
  • Scroll down to Lifestyle (the yellow options).
  • Choose ‘Shops’.
  • Search for ‘Sheds’ and click Sheds Direct Ireland.
  • Choose your benefit.
  • Once you’ve selected which one you want, you can click the large, blue bar down the bottom (It’s name will change depending on what you pick).
  • Complete your order as you normally would.

*Please note: All Revolut information was correct at the time of writing. Sheds Direct Ireland do not offer this cash-back, this is entirely dealt with in-app via Revolut and we have no say in how this process works in any way.

Buying a shed over the phone

You can purchase your Steel Shed over the phone for assembly only. We may take a deposit and the rest can be paid before assembly is completed on the day of construction.

As our flat-packed steel sheds go out with a third-party courier, for security reasons we cannot take payments over the phone or offer part-payments on these. If you want to order a flat-packed shed, you’ll need to pay in full first.

Ordering in store

You can of course order with us in store. We’re based in the Jamestown Business Park in Finglas. If you scroll down to the very bottom of the page here, you can see our opening hours and collection times in the website’s footer.

Alternative Payment Options for buying a shed

We can accept Bank Transfer, Postal Order and Cheque payments, however the shed/product cannot be dispatched until payment has been received by our accounts team.

We don’t offer finance for buying a shed directly ourselves, however you can avail of finance in the following two ways:

Revolut Payments (Online)

Revolut offer a ‘Pay Later‘ option on their app. We do not have any affiliation with this offer, nor do we have any say in their T&Cs. However, this is one way to get finance for a Sheds Direct Ireland shed. See how it works on the Revolut website and please note, that this option is only available online and through the Revolut app. Our staff cannot offer this service to you.

*Please note: All Revolut information was correct at the time of writing.

Humm

You can get finance through Humm for a Sheds Direct Ireland shed. You need to apply through Humm first and once approved, you then contact us in store at 01 864 4247 with your approval details.

We don’t have any say in their loan offers, their terms and conditions or payments schedule; They provide the finance and we provide the shed.

First off, make sure you read ‘What to expect after purchasing your metal shed’, page 1′.

Boxes of our steel sheds alongside sheets of plywood for scale

If you’ve opted for flat-packed delivery, you should expect to have your shed within 2-5 working days. The vast majority of our sheds are dispatched from our Warehouse in Finglas, though some are sent from Maynooth. We do not drop-ship any sheds. The sheds will be delivered either by the dedicated Sheds Direct Ireland team, or by a third party logistics company.

It’s vitally important that you are available to accept your shed on the day of delivery. Our team will call 30 minutes before delivery (we can offer up to an hour before, if necessary, but you must give us at least 24 hours notice if you require this).

We can’t stress it enough though – we cannot give times for delivery / assembly.

Why? We’ve the long answer here, but in a nutshell: people not being present at the time of delivery, traffic jams, delayed shed assemblies and adverse weather conditions are the main culprits. They can mean that our team can run behind, or ahead of schedule. We know it’s annoying, but due to these circumstances being out of our control, it’s currently the best that we can offer.

Flat-packed sheds come in boxes and they’ll go through most houses that have a full, clean run through the house. The boxes contain instructions, but they do not contain tools; we’d recommend getting a cordless screwdriver to really speed up assembly.

We’ll say it here just in case you don’t read the following section:

Flat-packed assembly is not for everyone.

(Please read the flat-packed assembly piece, if you’re going to attempt the build).

Collections

We’ve a full blog post on Shed Collections here, which goes through everything. However, I’ll give you the essential information below:

  • Collections are from our warehouse, not our showroom – but you’ll need to make an appearance at the showroom to make payment / have your docket stamped for collection.
  • Give us some time to process your order, or at lease a heads up on when you’re going to collect.
    • Don’t order a shed online at 1pm and then rock up to the showroom at 1.03pm expecting it to be ready. If you ordered on a Monday morning and collected from Tuesday morning onwards, that’d be grand.
  • Not all products can be collected in a car. Heavy Duty Sheds for example will need a larger, flat-bed truck with no height restriction.

Collection Times for getting a steel shed

Collections are strictly only available on Tuesday, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays only – and only between the following hours:

Tuesday:
 10.00am – 2.30pm
Wednesday: 10.00am – 2.30pm
Friday: 10.00am – 2.30pm
Saturday: 10.00am – 2.30pm

Collecting on someone’s behalf

Builders, family and friends can collect a shed that you’ve ordered. However they will need to have the details of the order; this includes the name on the order, the order number and the particular product. They will not be able to collect a shed that has any outstanding payments on it though.

Flat Packed Assembly is not for everyone

People who have experience with large flat-packed builds, who have patience, who plan ahead and who can understand our instructions, will have little issue with steel shed assembly.

A half assembled steel shed in a garden

If you’re on the fence about assembly or you think“it’s only a shed, how hard can it be?”, – please, please, please reconsider self-assembly. The vast majority of our negative reviews come from people who think they’ll be grand, but who then throw a wobbler when they realise what’s actually involved. We’ve a guide to self-assembly here, but even quicker than that, make sure you check off all these before opting for self-assembly.

  • You’ve read and understood the instructions for your shed ahead of time.
  • You will have at least one other able-bodied person available on the day to help you with assembly.
  •  You will open the contents of the boxes, group them by part and check off each piece before you begin assembling.
  • You’ll follow the instructions in order, you won’t jump ahead for the craic.
  • You’ll only assembly on a day that is not windy and that is dry.
  • You’ll have the proper tools as outlined in the instructions

What doesn’t come with the flat-packed option

Please note that our assembly service as offers lots of benefits other than a hands off approach. If you opt for self assembly:

  • You are saying that you’re able to assemble the shed yourself.
  • You do not get a plywood floor with the shed.
    • If you wish to add one, you’ll have to purchase this from a local builder’s supplier, cut to size and affix it down yourself.

If you need assistance with self-assembly

By opting for self-assembly, you are essentially saying that you’ve done all your due diligence and you’re well able to assemble it alone. As such, if you need assistance, it will not be instant or available after-hours. Our team will endeavour to help as soon as possible, but they will need to speak to a member of the fitting team first. To speed up the process:

  • If you have not checked off all the instructions, you will need to identify the pieces by name from the instructions as well as what page of the instructions that you are having the issue with.
    • We have dozens and dozens of sheds, with individually named parts. Saying it’s ‘the top bit, near the edge’, will not be as helpful as ‘Part 7R, for the Goldilocks Shed’, and can slow down our ability to help you.
  • You will be able to provide us with clear, well-lit photographs/videos of the part your having the issue with, the sheds’ base as well as wider shots of the shed. These will help us identify issues that you may not feel are the issue (but which actually are).
  • Please: Be polite to our staff.

Supply & Fit

First off, read ‘What to expect after purchasing your metal shed, page 2

Mammoth 12ft x 10ft garden shed

Where is supply and fit available

We can now offer supply and fit of our Steel Sheds in every county in Ireland. A third-party agent will assemble your shed if you are in the West of Ireland (Ned) or Cork (Karl). We will give your order details to them in line with our Privacy Policy.

Have your base ready

We do not offer a base assembly service and it’s vitally important that you have your solid, level base in place before our team arrive to assemble your shed. You can see what’s appropriate (and what’s absolutely not!) in our blog: It’s all about the Shed Base.

Other considerations for buying a shed with supply and fit

Other than the base, you will need to have someone available on the day to allow the team access the location and to advise exactly where they want the shed etc.

Contact

The team will call you 30 minutes to an hour before arriving. We can’t give you an exact time because the fitters arrange their own runs, there may be delays at a previous installation, traffic etc.

Payment

All payments must be made in full before any shed assemblies can be carried out.

Our shed assembly team build anywhere from 5-10 sheds a day. They’re generally flat-out during the Summer months and they’re doing manual work for at least 8 hours a day. As such, we hope you understand that our shed assembly team are just that – a team that assemble sheds, and only sheds.

Our shed assembly team will not:

  • Assemble any other products that you purchase (e.g. shelves, door canopies etc.)
  • Do any base work. This needs to be ready ahead of time.
  • Deliver the shed into your garden by ‘throwing it over a wall’. Our team need safe access to your back garden.
  • Bolt your shed down (this is a safety/insurance issue as we cannot guarantee the absence of pipes, wiring or guarantee against damage to the base).
  • Remove any plastic covering on shed doors/panels
  • Apply any internal screw caps (these are optional, but they’ll leave a bag hanging up inside should you wish to apply these yourself)
  • Any electrical work. You will need a qualified electrician to do any electrical work for you.

Whether you’re getting a shed flat-packed or supplied and fitted, you can see what to expect, in our guide, handily titled ‘What to expect after purchasing your metal shed from Sheds Direct Ireland, right here.

We strongly, strongly recommend that you read it.

If you want to get int ouch for any reason, you can contact us here.

Our social media channels and phone lines are only monitored during business hours. If you’re getting in touch with us after hours, we’ll be in touch as soon as possible on the next available business day.
